In addition to higher performance, the Gen2 features an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, not found on the original model. This can speed up operations such VPN connections (depending on configuration).

Pre-loaded with OPNsense or pfSense, they include most if not more of the features available in expensive commercial firewalls. For the advanced user, they are also compatible with other Linux and BSD distributions.
